Work-related back injuries can be complex

On Behalf of Pfeiffer Brown DiNicola & Frantz | May 16, 2024 | Workers' Compensation

Work-related back injuries are fairly common. In fact, some studies indicate that over 1 million workers suffer from back injuries each year. Back injuries can vary in terms of severity and causes. Nonetheless, all types of back injuries are generally very painful and they usually require those impacted to take time off to recover.

Work-related back injuries can be especially complex, partially due to the challenges detailed below.

The pain can come from multiple sources

The back is made up of numerous structures, such as the spine, muscles, tendons, nerves and other bones and joints. For the back to be pain-free, all of these components need to work in tandem. Oftentimes, with work-related back injuries, multiple areas of the back can be damaged. This can mean several sources of pain, different treatment options as well as different recovery times.

Obtaining an accurate diagnosis can be tricky

Back injuries are notoriously difficult to diagnose. There is no single diagnostic test that is 100 percent accurate for diagnosing back injuries. Those suffering from a back injury often have to see their doctor, go to the hospital or visit a chiropractor or physiotherapist. There may be several parties involved in the diagnostic process, which can take several weeks. Without an accurate diagnosis, it can be difficult for an employee to gauge how much time they will be unable to work for.

If you injured your back at work, you may be entitled to worker’s compensation benefits. The main concern that you will need to prove is that your injuries were work-related. By seeking legal guidance, you stand a good chance of obtaining benefits to cover your medical fees and other expenses.
