An overview of heavy machinery accidents

Many workers in and around Pottsville, Pennsylvania, operate heavy machinery. This can include things like diggers, forklifts, cranes and industrial factory equipment. Heavy machinery can make light work of tasks that would previously have been labor-intensive.

That being said, there are some downsides to heavy machinery. There is little margin for error with this equipment, and when things go wrong, this can mean serious injuries or even fatalities. How do accidents with heavy machinery occur?

Inexperienced operators

Those operating heavy equipment must be trained in how to use it. Sometimes, companies cut corners to complete tasks by deadlines. Nonetheless, before someone steps foot on a forklift, crane or other heavy machinery, they should be fully aware of the potential risks.

Inadequate PPE

PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment. This includes items like hard hats, gloves, safety glasses and safety boots. While PPE cannot completely prevent accidents it can negate the seriousness of injuries.

PPE can also include things such as guard rails and safety switches. Safety measures like this can mean the difference between someone surviving an accident with heavy machinery and not.

Lack of communication

Communication is essential when heavy machinery is in use. This isn’t limited to the operators of equipment, but it should apply to anyone who may be within the vicinity. Warning signs should be utilized in areas where heavy machinery is common. Machinery can also be fitted with flashing lights and alarms to alert onlookers when it is in motion. Those around heavy machinery are potentially in just as much danger as those operating it.

If you suffered a work-related injury, you do not have to show fault to claim compensation. You only need to have been engaging in work-related activities at the time. Seek legal guidance to find out more about workers’ compensation benefits.
