Common overuse injuries in retail

On Behalf of Pfeiffer Brown DiNicola & Frantz | Feb 10, 2025 | Workers' Compensation

The retail industry employs many people in Pennsylvania. While retail is not known as one of the most dangerous industries, accidents and injuries occur.

Workers in retail are especially affected by overuse injuries. What are some of the most common overuse injuries associated with retail?

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is common in the retail sector. This occurs when the nerves in the wrist become compressed, leading to tingling, numbness and a loss of sensation. Workers who suffer from this injury usually lose a significant amount of strength in their arms and hands.

In retail, CTS can arise from repeatedly scanning items, stocking shelves and lifting boxes. It usually begins as minor wrist strains and develops into a much more serious condition.

Chronic back issues

Another type of overuse injury that occurs in retail involves back issues. These often impact the lower back and can be debilitating. Such injuries can result from standing for long periods and lifting heavy objects every day.

There are numerous different types of lower back injuries, but lumbar disc herniation is one of the most common. This generally results in sharp pain, numbness and mobility issues.

Knee problems

The knees are an important joint for mobility, as they allow us to move freely and bend.  Nonetheless, the knees are prone to overuse injuries. Constant kneeling and walking on hard surfaces can cause damage to the bones, cartilage and tendons in the knee.

One notable knee injury in retail is patellar tendinitis. This occurs when the tendons connecting the shin bone and knee become inflamed. This condition is very painful and limits mobility.

If you have been injured on the job, you may be entitled to workers’ compensation. To help ensure that you follow the correct procedures while making your claim, it may help to seek legal guidance.
